U.S. Ambassador to Korea Sung Kim has cited rapper Psy and his global hit song "Gangnam Style" as the "perfect example of the growing ties between the U.S. and Korea."
On his blog "All About Sung Kim," the envoy on Thursday recalled his meeting with Psy, who visited the U.S. Embassy recently on a visa matter.
"Psy told me that wherever he goes in the U.S., people from all walks of life come up to him, congratulate him, and start talking about 'Gangnam Style,'" Kim wrote. "They often tell him how excited they are about his success, especially in promoting Korea's image overseas and the positive impact he is having on Korean Americans."
Although the rapper "is probably the most famous person on earth right now," he is "humble articulate, smart and pleasant," the ambassador added.
The embassy gave Psy an "O" visa reserved for people "who possess extraordinary abilities in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics, or who has a demonstrated a record of extraordinary achievement in the motion picture or television industry and has been recognized nationally or internationally for those achievements." David Beckam and Swedish golf player Annika Sorenstom also have O visas.
