Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Seoul National University and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) made it into the top 100 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Thomson Reuters.
POSTECH's latest rank at 50th is three notches above last year's, while SNU (59th) and KAIST (68th) managed to pull themselves into the top 100.
Yonsei University ranked 183th, while Sungkyunkwan University made it within the 201 to 225th places and Korea University in the 226th to 250th rankings.
At No. 1 is the California Institute of Technology, while University of Oxford and Stanford University jointly rank second. Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University of California at Berkeley and University of Chicago round out the top 10. Yale University ranks 11th.
The highest ranked Asian school is University of Tokyo at No. 27, followed by National University of Singapore (29th) and University of Hong Kong (35th). In China, Peking University (46th) and Tsinghua University (52nd) rank highest.
In engineering and technology, the three Korean universities are in the top 50 with POSTECH 24th, SNU 36th and KAIST 44th. But no Korean university made it on the top 50 lists in the other areas of arts and humanities, clinical and pre-clinical health, life sciences, physical sciences or social sciences.
Tony Sheil at Australia's Griffith University said the latest university evaluations show that major institution in Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and China have made great strides, while those in Europe, the U.S. and Japan have declined.
Other similar rankings include those of Quacquarelli Symonds and Shanghai Jiaotong University.
