The approval ratings for Korea's three main presidential candidates remain too close to call, but for the first time since independent candidate Ahn Cheol-soo announced his bid, the main opposition Democratic United Party's Moon Jae-in is ahead of Ahn in one of the polls.

In a poll after the Chuseok holiday of 1,000 eligible voters, Moon's rating in a three-way race stood at 28.5 percent, with Ahn trailing closely behind with about 27 percent, well within the margin of error.

The ruling Saenuri Party's Park Geun-hye was in the lead with nearly 40 percent.

But in a hypothetical two-way race, Moon was ahead of Park by nearly eight percentage points with more than 50 percent support. And between Park and Ahn, Ahn's ratings stood at 53 percent, leading by more than 10 points.
