Seokga Pagoda to Be Dismantled for Repairs

The three-story Seokga Pagoda at the Bulguk Temple in the historic city of Gyeongju will be completely dismantled for repairs for the first time since it was erected 1,270 years ago.

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, which has examined the Seokga Pagoda or Seokgatap for damage and wear since May last year, said on Thursday it will dismantle the pagoda piece by piece by early next year.

Then a thorough study is planned to investigate the soil and pebbles stuffing the pagoda and the ground supporting the national treasure before the restoration is complete in late 2014.

Experts said the ancient kingdom of Shilla, which created the Seokgatap, placed offerings under the foundations of structures, raising hopes of discovering relics from the era.
