Korea on Wednesday celebrated Armed Forces Day, which properly falls next Monday, at military headquarters in Gyeryong, South Chungcheong Province.
Thousands gathered to watch performances by the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force in celebration of the 64 years since the nation established its modern military.
President Lee Myung-bak in a speech stressed the importance of national security.
The event featured martial art stunts, a parachute landing and others, ending with an airshow by the Air Force acrobatic team, the Black Eagles.
It came early because this year's Armed Forces Day overlaps with Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving.
