Pantech will release the Vega R3 on Monday, further heating up competition in the domestic smartphone market. The gadget with fourth-generation LTE technology will be equipped with a 5.3-inch display, Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, and a 13 million-pixel camera.
The new device will have an edge in terms of both hardware and software including user experience, a Pantech staffer said. "We will hold a launch event where we will invite general consumers as well as reporters and industry experts, and [we're confident] the handset will receive rave reviews."
The LTE smartphone market here was dominated by Samsung in the first half of this year, with sales of over 5 million units. Competition for second place among Pantech and LG Electronics was fierce, with each selling around 1.3 million units.
The drive to win over consumers is expected to become ever fiercer as LG and Apple have recently released their Optimus G and iPhone 5 handsets, respectively, while Samsung plans to roll out its Galaxy Note 2 next month.
