The number of smartphone subscribers crossed the 30 million mark on Tuesday. According to the three mobile providers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, there were 29.97 million as of Monday and about 40,000 more people signed up on Tuesday. That means six out of 10 Koreans are now using smartphones.
Since Apple's iPhone was introduced in 2009, the number of smartphone users has soared. It crossed the 10 million mark in late March last year and the 20 million mark in October last year.
Many mobile phone users have switched to smartphones since July last year as mobile providers introduced 4G LTE services with wireless network speeds up to five times faster than 3G. The number of LTE service users currently stands at 9.21 million, more than 30 percent of all smartphone subscribers.
SK Telecom had the biggest chunk of the market with 49.2 percent, followed by KT (31.4 percent) and LG Uplus (19.4 percent).
