Russia has asked Incheon to renew the loan of a historic cruiser flag for another 10 years, the city government said Sunday.
The flag belonged to a Russian battleship named Varyag that sank off Incheon in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. The soldiers chose death over surrender to Japan and blew up their own ship.
In Russia, the Varyag and the soldiers are regarded as symbol of valor. The flag is on loan from the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum.
The Russian government requested loan of the flag in 2009. The agreement between the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum and the Central Naval Museum of St. Petersburg was initially for nine months, but Russia renewed the loan for two years on Nov. 12, 2010. This time, it is asking for a renewal until November 2022.
A city government official said the request "can be interpreted as an intention to permanently keep the flag. We will make decision after discussing it with the central government."
