      August 14, 2012 12:00

A hardy spindle tree on Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo will be designated a natural monument, the Cultural Heritage Administration said on Monday. Some 50 cm high and 7 m in circumference, the tree clings dramatically to a cliff on the island.

The CHA said the oldest living tree on the islets has survived for more than 100 years braving strong winds and meager soil and therefore carries a strong symbolic significance.

The agency will spend the next month gathering the opinions of various experts.
