How to Stay Healthy in the Mid-Summer Heat

      Due to the high temperature and humidity at this time of year, it is important to pay close attention to your health as it is easy to become listless and lose your appetite. The sweltering heat can induce feelings of sluggishness, when the body tires quickly from the slightest movement.

      As such, the key is to start introducing ways to relieve fatigue and stress while slowly building up your stamina. Avoid exposing yourself to excessive heat and eat a balanced diet. If you eat irregularly, stomachache or heartburn will become a problem. Try to eat 80 percent of your usual intake as over-eating, or an unbalanced diet, can induce a loss of concentration.

      Drinking water often can help maintain good health. Increase your intake of fluids to at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day. It is better to sip often rather than guzzle once or twice. If you have a sensitive stomach or intestinal issues, avoid ice-cold water as this can trigger stomachaches or diarrhea.

      Ultraviolet rays also should be considered the number one enemy in the mid-summer months. Minimize the amount of time you spent outside during the day, especially from noon to 3 p.m., which is when the UV rays are at their strongest. If you have to venture outdoors, be sure to apply sun block and take a hat, sunglasses and a parasol.

      Sleep is also crucial to avoid feeling drained. It is hard to get a good night’s kip at this time of year because of the tropical nights, so try to go to bed and wake up at regular hours, and refrain from eating three hours before bedtime.
