A government website that lists sex offenders was almost paralyzed by traffic on Monday after it was revealed that the prime suspect in the kidnap and murder of a 10-year-old girl in South Gyeongsang Province is her neighbor. Many concerned parents logged on to check if any convicted sex offenders live in their neighborhood.
"We usually get around 200,000 to 300,000 visitors a month on average, but on Sunday 240,000 people visited the website and on Monday 800,000, causing connection speeds to slow to a trickle," said Kang Jong-min at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
The website, which has been accessible since July 2010, contains the profiles of 2,112 convicted sex offenders. Details include ID photos, names, ages, height, weight, the crimes they committed and where they live.
