Neighbor Held in Kidnap-Murder of 10-Year-Old Girl

Police on Monday arrested a man on charges of attempting to rape and strangling to death a 10-year-old girl in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province. According to police, Kim Jeom-deok (45) lived in the same neighborhood as the victim, Han A-reum.

Kim is accused of abducting A-reum last Monday as she was heading to school and taking her to his house in his truck, where he tried to rape her. Police say he strangled her to death when she resisted and buried her body.

Kim, who has a Vietnamese wife and a three-year-old daughter, abducted A-reum near a bus stop on the outskirts of Tongyeong at 7:50 a.m. and drove around in his truck for half an hour searching for a place to rape her. He ended up taking her to his home around 100 m from the bus stop, according to police. He reached his house at 8:24 a.m. and murdered her 14 minutes later, police said.

Police searched Kim's house and found 70 pornographic video clips and 140 obscene stories in his computer. Traces of A-reum's blood were found on a box cutter discovered in his truck. Forensic tests revealed that the blood matched her DNA.

Kim has confessed. Police quoted him as saying he got the urge to kidnap her when he saw her pink short skirt.
