Will Korean baseball fans get to see Samsung Lions' slugger Lee Seung-yeop set another monumental record this week?

Lee is just one homer shy of racking up 500 career home runs in Korea and Japan combined. He hit his 499th against Kia Tigers in Daegu on Sunday, and is now going for the record during a three-game date with Hanwha Eagles from Tuesday to Thursday in Daejeon. This will be the last series before the All-Star Game.

Lee has hit 340 home runs in Korea, and 159 in Japan.

Few players have climbed to such lofty statistical heights in the U.S. and Japan, two countries with significantly longer histories of professional baseball than Korea.

Only 25 hitters in U.S. Major League Baseball's 136 years of history have recorded the feat, and seven in Japan, which has a professional league dating back 76 years. The number edges up to 33 if Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Hideki Matsui is included. Matsui has had a successful career in both Japan and the U.S.
