239 Korean Athletes Gear Up for London Olympics

With just 30 days to go before the 2012 London Olympics get under way on July 27, Team Korea is making its final preparations as it is targeting at least 10 gold medals and a top-10 finish in the final medal table.

Four years ago in Beijing, the country sent 267 athletes and finished seventh overall with 13 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals.

The 30th Summer Games will run for 17 days until Aug. 12, offering a total of 302 gold medals to be won in 26 disciplines. The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games expects to welcome 10,500 athletes, 5,000 staff and 20,000 reporters from 204 countries to the highly anticipated sporting bonanza.

Some 239 Korean athletes in 22 disciplines have obtained berths for the upcoming Games. With an exception of women’s basketball and track and field, the roster has been finalized. Notably, Heo Min-ho will become the first Korean to compete in the Olympic triathlon.

The women's basketball team has been competing in the final round of preliminaries in Ankara, Turkey, since Monday as it tries to make its fifth straight appearance at the Games. The top five of 12 teams in the tournament will qualify.

Meanwhile, the nation’s 17 track-and-field athletes for the Games will be confirmed on Thursday, and the final 18-man roster for the Olympic football team is set to be announced the following day. There will be no Korean athletes seen in the tennis competitions or equestrian and canoe events.
