CJ Foodville, which operates Tous les Jours, said on Thursday it will open a store in New York City on Friday. This bakery cafe will be its first in the city and the 18th outlet in the U.S. for the Korean bakery franchise.
The new bakery on 32nd Street and Broadway is located in mid-town Manhattan near the Empire State Building. "It's significant that we are launching a store in the capital of global commerce and culture," a CJ Foodville official said. "We believe the business prospects are bright in New York, a city where Korean pop culture is gaining in popularity and there are plenty of health-conscious consumers."
CJ Foodville hopes the store will play a major role in expanding its franchise business in the northeastern region of the U.S. The franchise plans to open other bakery cafes in New Jersey, Virginia and Texas, expanding the number of its U.S. outlets to 25 this year.
Tous les Jour operates 48 stores abroad, including 11 in China, 15 in Vietnam, and two each in the Philippines and Indonesia.
CJ Foodville plans also to launch other stores in its stable of franchises, including its restaurant chains specializing in steak and bibimbap (rice with an assortment of seasonal vegetables). The bibimbap chain "Bibigo" will open 17 stores this year, including one in London in July timed to coincide with the opening of the Summer Olympics there. The steak restaurant chain VIPS will open a store in Beijing during the second half of this year.
CJ Foodville aims to generate W500 billion (US$1=W1,152) in overseas revenue by 2016, mainly from China.
