Some 421,000 people commute to work in Seoul's affluent Gangnam district south of the Han River, according to Statistics Korea. A quarter of them live in Songpa and Gwanak in southern Seoul and in the satellite cities of Seongnam and Yongin in Gyeonggi Province south of the capital.
Statistics Korea said the daily net inflow of people into Seoul altogether totals 705,000, substantially more than the 84,000 people who commute to second-ranked North Gyeongsang Province.
The areas with the highest numbers of residents commuting elsewhere are Gyeonggi Province (717,000 people), Incheon (103,000 people) and Daegu (92,000 people).
In Seoul, Gangnam has the greatest influx of people during the day among local governing districts, followed by Jung (268,000 people), and Jongno (178,000 people).
Among provincial cities and countries with the largest number of people leaving during the day are Bucheon west of Seoul (164,000 people), Goyang (134,000 people) and Seongnam (122,000 people) -- all in Gyeonggi Province.
