Mire Victims of Bullying Come Forward

Victims of school violence and their parents are increasingly speaking out, defying threats of retaliation from the bullies. The National Police Agency on Monday said 14,118 cases of school violence have been reported to bullying hotline 117 from January to May, compared to a mere 77 in the same period last year.

Amid the growing school violence, the 117 Hotline was recently set up by the National Police Agency and the ministries of education and family.

But the number of reports directly to the schools where bullying occurs remains the same, reflecting distrust among students and parents for fear that the school will not protect the identity of victims, thus exposing them to revenge.

Reports from victims accounted for 59.6 percent of the cases reported to the 117 Hotline, followed by reports from parents or family (31.7 percent) and friends (3.9 percent).
