Businesses to Launch Energy-Saving Campaign

      Large businesses and conglomerates, including Samsung Group, have decided to launch energy-saving campaigns amid fears of a power shortage this summer.

      Samsung said on Wednesday it will cut power consumption at its production plants by five percent compared to last year and scale back electricity usage by 10 percent at its offices.

      It plans to adjust production schedules during the peak hours of power consumption between 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day in order to conserve energy, and will replace old facilities and equipment with ones that consume less electricity.

      Some 140,000 companies plan to begin similar energy-saving measures from June. The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry said it aims to join hands with 71 regional chambers of commerce to implement power-saving measures, including having elevators stop on alternate floors.
