Smartphone users account for more than 50 percent of all mobile subscribers. According to the three mobile service providers KT, SK Telecom and LG Uplus on Monday, the number of smartphone users stands at 26.72 million, 50.8 percent of all 52.55 million mobile subscribers.
SK Telecom has 13.30 million or 50.2 percent of 26.5 million subscribers, KT 8.80 million or 53.3 percent of 16.5 million subscribers, and LG Uplus 4.62 million or 484. percent of 9.55 million subscribers.
Smartphone use took off in November 2009, when KT introduced Apple's iPhone. The number of users was a mere 470,000 then but exceeded the 10 million mark in March last year and surged above 20 million in October last year.
Smartphones brought a sea change to the way people use their phones because of easy access to the Internet and a wealth of applications.
"The smartphone has brought big changes to people's lives, corporate working patterns and the IT market," an official with the Korea Communications Commission said.
But there still are many problems to solve, such as heavy service charges and leakage of personal information and other security risks.
