The minor opposition Unified Progressive Party is on the verge of splitting as a feud deepens between the party's main hard-left wing and moderates.
A key labor union threatened to withdraw its support from the five-month-old party unless it resolves a scandal over alleged fraud in the selection of parliamentary candidates. Three of the lawmakers who were selected in the controversial party poll and subsequently won seats in the National Assembly in the April 11 general elections have resigned.
The party's central committee meeting Saturday saw violent physical clashes between the leftist and moderate faction over the replacement of the party leadership with an interim committee.
