The number of Long Term Evolution subscribers in Korea has surpassed 4 million. LTE is a 4th generation mobile communication service that offers data speeds up to five times faster than the regular 3G connection.
The LTE market has enjoyed rapid growth recently, with 7.7 percent of 52 million mobile phone subscribers using it just 10 months since it was launched last July. Industry insiders expect the total number of LTE subscribers to hit 10 million by the end of this year.
SK Telecom has the largest number of subscribers with 2.01 million as of Monday. The number surpassed 2 million just 76 days after the 1 million benchmark was passed, SK said on Tuesday.
LG Uplus has 1.71 million LTE subscribers and expects the number to hit 2 million early next month. KT, which started the service early this year, did not reveal the exact number of subscribers, but it is estimated to be more than 400,000.
