Tablet PC sales will reach about 120 million units this year, nearly double last year's figure, U.S. business magazine Fortune reported Wednesday quoting market researcher Gartner.
"The research firm projected tablet sales to end users to reach 118.9 million units in 2012, up 98 percent from 2011," Fortune wrote.
Apple's iPad series is expected to dominate the market. Apple took 66.6 percent of the tablet market by selling some 40 million iPads around the world last year. With its release of the new iPad last month, the California-based company will likely continue to dominate the market with an estimated 61.4 percent share this year.
Android-based tablet makers like Samsung Electronics and HTC sold 17.2 million units last year, taking a mere 28.8 percent of the market. Their share is expected to grow slightly to 31.8 percent.
Gartner predicted sales of 4.8 million units of Microsoft's Windows 8 tablet, which will be rolled out in the second half of this year.
