SK Encar's website for used car sales has drawn countless foreign visitors since it opened in 2009. About 20,000 members have so far logged in to the website, called Autowini.

Some 15,527 of them are looking to buy second-hand cars, three times as many as the 4,781 sellers.

The visitors are from a total of 186 countries, almost the full number of UN 193 member states.

"The demand for Korean second-hand cars is increasing more rapidly than the popularity of new Korean vehicles overseas," said Choi Mun-suk of SK Encar. "Advanced markets like the U.S. and the U.K. are looking mainly for components, while in newly emerging markets sedans, SUVs and buses are very popular."

The number of Korean second-hand cars sold overseas rose 54 percent from about 161,500 in 2006 to about 248,000 last year. The most popular model is the old Hyundai Avante XD, which is sold the instant it is posted on the website.

Russians topped the list of foreign buyers on Autowini last year, and they prefer vans like the Starrex, while Vietnamese buyers want compact cars like the Morning. A German hotel went so far as to airlift an Equus limousine.
