Typhoon-Force Winds Batter Korea

Typhoon-force winds caused widespread damage across the country on Tuesday, and Seoul saw the first April snow in 19 years. Strong gusts with speeds of 20-30 m/s caused 120 flight cancellations, including all domestic flights.

In Japan, around 800 flights were cancelled, trains stopped running and people were injured due to the severe weather.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, wind speeds reached 31.1 m/s in the mountains of Jeju Island, while strong winds also swept across Yeosu (31 m/s), Jindo (30.7 m/s), Wando (29.1 m/s) in South Jeolla Province and Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province (28.5 m/s). Seoul was also buffeted by gales of 19 m/s.

A KMA spokesman said a strong low pressure front is passing through Korea and strong winds are expected to last until Wednesday.
