Samsung Electronics was the most frequent Korean defendant in intellectual property lawsuits in the U.S. last year. This suggests rivals are trying to hold in check by filing more and more patent suits against the Korean electronics giant, which is gaining TV and smartphone market share there.
According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday, 117 intellectual property lawsuits including patent litigation were filed against several Korean firms last year.
Samsung topped the list with 43. Next came LG Electronics (31 lawsuits), Pantech (11), SK Hynix (seven), and Hyundai Motor (six).
Some 66 were filed by "non-practicing entities," or patent trolls, which buy up patents solely for the purpose of collecting royalties and have no other business.
