Cheong Wa Dae has welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama's nomination of Korean-born Jim Yong Kim to the presidency of the World Bank. In a statement, the presidential office said it believes Kim is the right person to carry out reforms at the World Bank and try to eradicate poverty worldwide.
Obama's unexpected pick of Kim, the president of Dartmouth College, is seen as a move to counter claims by some African and Latin American countries who say the U.S. has only appointed Americans to lead the 187-nation bank.
The World Bank oversees fund and projects to build infrastructure and alleviate poverty in developing nations.
