Five-star hotel weddings were once the preserve of celebrities and the super-rich, but a recent poll suggests that the practice has increasingly trickled down the social ladder. The survey of 310 newlywed couples nationwide was carried out by matchmaking firm Sunoo for the Chosun Ilbo.
The survey found that 22.9 percent got married in hotels, exceeding the 20 percent mark for the first time. In a similar survey in 2009, only 13.8 percent of couples chose hotels for wedding ceremonies.
Forty-two percent of couples whose families' combined assets were W3 billion or more had hotel weddings, but so did 19 percent of those with family assets between W1 billion and W3 billion, and the same proportion among those with less than W1 billion.
