With mounting pressure from students and the government to lower college tuition, more than 100 universities around Korea have decided to slash fees this year. The Korea Student Aid Foundation said Tuesday that as of last week 109 universities, or about a third of all, will lower tuition by an average of nearly 5 percent.

The government will pour in about W1.8 trillion to help universities reduce tuition and ease the financial burden on students (US$1=W1,134). The agency says the remaining colleges, including some top-ranking private universities, have until the end of this week to decide on this year's fees.

Last year, Korea was ranked the third most expensive country for college education among members of the OECD.
