Students who attend universities in the provinces are flocking to Seoul during their winter vacation to increase their chances of landing a job after graduation by taking preparatory classes or joining training programs as the job market becomes ever-more competitive.
Meanwhile, more students from provincial areas who are attending colleges in the capital are also deciding not to return home during their vacations. Despite the additional burden of living expenses such as housing, they say they have to stay in Seoul to boost their chances of gaining meaningful employment.
The employment rate of college graduates stood at 58.6 percent in 2010, which means that only 292,000 out of 497,900 found work. A student who is preparing to work in Seoul said, "There are few private institutes or cram courses outside Seoul, so I had to come here to seek out more information in preparation for job opportunities."
