A South Korean activist has defied a ban on visits to Pyongyang to pay her respects to the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, a group of leftwing organizations said Monday. Hwang Hye-ro (35) is a member of a hard-left Korean organization in France.
As a South Korean national she needs permission from the government to visit North Korea since the two Koreas are still technically at war, but the government earlier said it would permit no condolence visits.
Prosecutors and police vowed to deal firmly with any illegal visits to North Korea and attempts by leftwing groups to set up memorial altars for Kim in the South. Prosecutors said Hwang will be charged with violating the National Security Law.
