North Korea has said Lee Hee-ho, the widow of President Kim Dae-jung, and Hyundai Group chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun will be welcome to attend the funeral of leader Kim Jong-il next Wednesday. The North in a message through the truce village of Panmunjom on Thursday afternoon said they are welcome to travel overland to Pyongyang.
A South Korean government official said it is quite possible they will meet Kim’s successor Kim jong-un.
Government officials are in final consultations with Lee and Hyun's aides about the size of their entourage and the timing of their trip. The government originally banned politicians from attending the funeral, but former Democratic Party floor leader Park Ji-won and former unification minister Lim Dong-won could accompany Lee if she insists.
There also a chance that two or three government officials will be included in what now looks like a quasi-official delegation to try and open a new inter-Korean dialogue channel.
