Unification Ministry staff were given two intelligence analysis training sessions by the U.S.' Central Intelligence Agency this year. According to the Unification Ministry, around a dozen members of its staff were trained by the CIA in April and November to learn to analyze intelligence from socialist countries.
A ministry official said, "The CIA taught them techniques on which hypotheses to pick and which ones to throw out, but we did not see any major differences from the methods we use. It was an introductory session rather than a training program."
A government official said the CIA early this year offered to demonstrate the analysis techniques and the ministry felt it "could improve the skills of staff." The official added the U.S. did not demand anything in return but it was a one-off session rather than a regular program.
