The ice skating rink at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall will open to the public on Friday with a special performance by Olympic speed skating champions. It will remain open until Feb. 12.
The temporary rink in the heart of Seoul has become an annual tradition since it first launched in 2004. And this year, to celebrate Korea's winning bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, a separate rink has been created to give people a taste of the sport of curling.
The main rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and on Sundays, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays. The entrance fee and skate rental cost will be just W1,000 (US$1=W1,154), which remains unchanged from eight years ago. Storage lockers will cost an additional W500.
Following the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday, top speed skaters Lee Kyu-hyuk and Lee Sang-hwa will hold a skating session with visitors.
