Kkokkomyeon or instant noodles which keep their spicy savor without red hot chilli peppers, was named the business success story of the year in an online poll by the Samsung Economic Research Institute. SERI asked the opinion of 7,725 website subscribers and experts.
Korea Yakult released Kkokkomyeon in August, realizing an idea by the comedian Lee Kyung-kyu, who introduced it on a reality show. The product was a hit especially among younger people.
The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the second place, followed by free smartphone SMS app KakaoTalk, reality TV show "I Am a Singer," Samsung's smartphone Galaxy S2, and K-pop.
"The popularity of Kkokkomyeon, Steve Jobs and 'I Am a Singer' reflects a trend of people getting excited about novelty and a break with received ideas," SERI said.
