North Korea has mobilized all state-run organs to denounce the South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement. According to data a security agency submitted to Grand National Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun on Sunday, the North Korean state media have slammed the deal as a "pro-American flunkey agreement" and a "shameful treaty that will lead to national ruin."
The North Korean propaganda website Uriminzokkiri on Nov. 8 said, "The political lives of the GNP lawmakers who are taking the lead in [the ratification of] the South Korea-U.S. FTA will come to an end the very day [it is ratified]." The GNP last week railroaded ratification through in the face of violent protests from the opposition parties.
North Korean state media paired pictures of young South Koreans protesting against the FTA with random pictures of riot police cracking down on protests.
Last Saturday alone, the official KCNA news agency, which is aimed at overseas consumers, and Radio Pyongyang, which targets a domestic audience, carried a dozen items denouncing ratification of the FTA.
"The North used exactly the same logic as South Korean left-wingers in opposing the Seoul-Washington FTA," said Ryu Dong-ryeol of the Police Science Institute. "This shows that the North's propaganda against the South is being reproduced on a bigger scale through the Internet."
