The roof of the Heunginjimun or East Gate, designated Treasure No. 1, was partially damaged by record downpours in Seoul last week, but the Jongno District Office did not start trying to fix the damage until four days after it was reported on Friday.

Some parts of the roof's ridge were chipped.

"The aged gate underwent repairs in 1998 and seems to have become soaked in heavy rains," an official with the Cultural Heritage Administration explained.

Emergency repair work was carried out on Tuesday.

The historic gate was left unattended and without a suitable degree of government-level protection, a civic group complained. It said the case reveals the shoddy way in which cultural properties are managed.
