Many office workers enjoy solo vacations, a straw poll suggests. In the poll of 825 office workers by job portal Career, some 33.8 percent of respondents said they like to go on vacation with their family, but almost as many -- 32.4 percent -- said they enjoy vacationing alone. Respondents were able to tick multiple answers.

Asked why they want to go on holiday alone, 46.1 percent said they prefer to enjoy leisure time alone rather than spend their vacation in overcrowded resorts with other people. Some 41.6 percent said they want to be able to suit themselves. Other reasons were avoiding the high cost of traveling with others or failure to match their schedules with those of friends or family (40.4 percent each).

It seems the best place to spend the holidays alone is at home as 59.6 percent cited resting at home as their holiday plans. Next came domestic travel (39.3 percent), cultural activities (29.2 percent), and overseas travel (16.9 percent). Some 7.5 percent picked shopping and 5.6 percent spa treatments and plastic surgery.

Respondents estimated the cost of a solo vacation at W328,000 on average (US$1=W1,052). The biggest group or 33.7 percent said they will spend less than W100,000, followed by W100,000-200,000 (23.6 percent), W200,000-300,000 (12.4 percent), and more than W1 million (12.4 percent).

More than half or 55.4 percent thought they can save money if they travel alone. Some 27.3 percent said there is no difference and 17.3 percent said solo travel is more expensive.

A solid 40.4 percent said they spent their vacation alone last year.
