South Korean and U.S. marines are staging a joint drill on Baeknyeong Island for the first time, a military officer said Wednesday. "As part of the U.S. Marine Corps' Korean Incremental Training Program, a joint mobility exercise has been conducted on the marines' drill field on Baeknyeong Island since July 2," the officer added.
The drill ends Thursday.
The officer said this is the first time the Korean and U.S. marines have staged a joint exercise on one of the northwesternmost islands.
Some 230 troops from the Third U.S. Marine Division and about 150 troops from the Sixth Korea Marine Brigade took part. They reportedly practiced responding to a surprise local provocation against the islands by North Korean special forces.
