Rise in Holiday Bonuses Likely to Spur Foreign Travel

More companies are giving their staff holiday bonuses this year, the Korea Employers Federation said on Sunday.

Some 72.7 percent of small or medium-sized companies are giving summer holiday bonuses this year, up 11.6 percent from last year's 61.1 percent, according to a recent poll the KEF conducted on 523 employees and 376 companies. The percentage of large corporation doing the same went up 7.1 percentage points to 81.4 percent over the same period.

The poll also showed that bonuses affect workers' holiday plans. Those whose bonuses are expected to be between W337,000 and W482,000 said that they "don't have any special plans" to take a vacation this year, or that they are likely to vacation in Korea. A majority of the recipients of bonuses in the W800,000 range plan to head overseas for some rest and relaxation this year.
