A forum kicked off in Seoul on Monday bringing together the world's leading think tanks to discuss pressing challenges related to nuclear weapons and nuclear power.
About 250 leading nuclear experts, engineers and intellectuals from across the globe are participating in the three-day Asan Plenum, which is running under the banner "Our Nuclear Future." This year's forum focuses on five major themes: nonproliferation, disarmament, peaceful use, nuclear security and deterrence.
South Korea's Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan said in his opening speech that with the recent nuclear crisis in Japan, North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons, and Seoul set to host the second Nuclear Security Summit next year, the Asan Plenum will play an important role in setting the global agenda on nuclear issues.
