A South Korean court has sentenced a Somali man to life in prison for attacking a South Korean ship and holding it for six days in January.
The Busan District Court on Friday handed the life sentence to Mahomed Araye, who was charged with attempted murder and robbery for shooting and seriously injuring the ship's captain. Three other pirates were given sentences of 13 to 15 years.
Pirates seized the South Korean ship Samho Jewelry on January 15 and held it for six days. South Korean naval commandos recaptured the vessel in a shootout.
The ship captain survived the shooting and none of the 21 crew members was injured, but eight pirates died in a gun battle.
The four sentenced Friday were captured and brought back to South Korea, along with a fifth pirate who pleaded guilty to all charges. He is to be sentenced separately.
