President Lee Myung-bak on Wednesday called for efforts toward greater social integration in the spirit of the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising.
In a message for a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the uprising, Lee said, "Let us overcome our regional, generational and ideological conflicts and achieve social integration based on the spirit of the May 18 uprising." The message was read by Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik.
A memorial service was held at the May 18 Cemetery on Tuesday, and some 4,000 people marked the eve of the anniversary in a city square.
