Number of Vehicles in Seoul Set to Top 3 Million

The total number of registered motor vehicles in Seoul is expected to surpass the three million-mark next month.

The number of registered vehicles, including passenger cars, buses, trucks and special purpose vehicles, came to 2.995 million as of the end of March and will likely exceed 3 million by late May, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Sunday.

The figure has been increasing by 1,000 to 10,000 each month, from 2.981 million at the end of last year to 2.991 million in January and 2.992 million in February. Over the past fifteen years the figure has risen by 830,000.

Passenger cars for private use made up the greatest portion at 77 percent or 2.301 million as of late March.

"The rise is mainly due to the growing economy and increasing population in Seoul," said a government official.
