The 12th annual Jeonju International Film Festival, which specializes in independent and low budget films, will be held from April 28 to May 6 in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province. Tickets to the opening and closing ceremonies go on sale from 2 p.m. on Tuesday, and other tickets from 11 a.m. on Thursday through the festival's website (www.jiff.or.kr).
A total of 190 films from 38 countries will screen at this year's event. A large selection of films from Spain have been invited, with a spotlight on new experimental forms of filmmaking, while a special screening of Portuguese films will mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Portugal.
Three new European films will be showcased in the Jeonju Digital Project section, which supports filmmakers with W50 million each for creative digital works. This year's recipients are Claire Denis and Jean-Marie Straub of France and José Luis Guerín of Spain.
The festival will kick off with "Nader and Simin, A Separation" by Iran's Asghar Farhadi, which won three prizes -- the Golden Bear and best actor and actresses awards -- at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. The closing film will be the winner of the Korean feature competition.
