Some 17 hills, valleys and rocks in Antarctica will be listed with Korean names in the geographical dictionary of the continent.
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said the names Korea proposed for locations near the Korean scientific research station, King Sejong Station, have been included in the Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica, which lists around 36,000 geographical names.
The names such as Arirang Hill, Araon Valley and Chotdae Rock were suggested by Koreans as being phonetically beautiful and easy to pronounce.
The Gazetteer is administered by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, which was established in 1958 to coordinate international research activities on the continent.
