Seoul Plaza is being refreshed for spring as a greener space where people can relax. The makeover is scheduled to be finished by April 1.
The city government has removed the outdoor ice-skating rink from the plaza and is replacing the green lawn that died during winter and planting new flower beds of pansies and tulips.
The fountain at the plaza, which was shut off for the winter in November, will be turned on again after a system check. As part of a national energy saving campaign, the fountain's operating hours will be reduced from 7:30am-9pm to 10am-6:30pm.
Seoul Plaza was designated as a non-smoking zone from March 1. A grace period is on until May 31, after which violators will face fines of W100,000 (US$1=W1,122).
