Letters purportedly written by the late actress Jang Ja-yeon, which how she was forced to provide sexual favors for dozens of business and media heavyweights, were fabricated, the National Forensic Service has concluded. The letters were in fact written by a man identified only as Jeon (31), who is in jail and claims to have been Jang's friend.
"After comparing Jang Ja-yeon's handwriting with the letters in question, we concluded that they are not identical," said the NFS.
Gyeonggi provincial police said it appears Jeon wrote the letters himself after acquiring information about Jang through newspaper clippings and practicing her handwriting based on copies of her letters published in newspapers.
Police have decided not to reopen the investigation into the actress' suicide based on the allegations.
SBS News, which unveiled the letters, apologized to viewers on Wednesday and said, "We ensured that the letters underwent a thorough screening for authenticity, but since the NFS has ruled that they were not written by Jang herself, we have decided to accept the finding."
