Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin on Thursday pledged to reconsider the format of the military's psychological warfare operations against North Korea. Kim was responding to lawmakers' concerns about the military's open engagement in floating helium balloons carrying propaganda leaflets to North Korea.
The matter was raised by Grand National Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min at the National Assembly's Defense Committee.
GNP lawmaker Chung Ui-hwa said propaganda targeting ordinary North Koreans should be handled by the government, not the military, and Kim pledged the ministry will fully review the matter as well.
But he gave no answer when asked whether the military was involved in abruptly releasing the information on the dissemination of propaganda flyers but replied he will clarify the matter later in a separate report.
