The sister of the fraudulent businessman at the heart of the so-called BBK scandal during the 2007 presidential election made an unexpected visit to Korea on Friday. Prosecutors immediately questioned Erica Kim, whose indictment had been suspended because she lives in the U.S.

When Kim Kyung-joon was investigated on charges of embezzling W31.9 billion of the funds of a boiler room named Optional Ventures and stock manipulation in 2007, Erica Kim mounted a campaign to defend her brother. The family said then-presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak had himself authorized the stock fraud.

But investigators concluded that the pair faked evidence and Lee had no knowledge of the dubious operation despite the fact that he was nominally one of the owners. Erica Kim was questioned on suspicion of being an accomplice to misappropriation of funds and defamation.
