Workers on Parental Leave Surpassed 40,000 Last Year

The number of people taking time off from work to care for their new-born babies is increasing.

Statistics Korea said on Friday that the number of female workers on maternity leave in 2010 jumped 15 percent from the year before to surpass 40,000 for the first time ever.

The number of fathers taking paternity leave jumped 63 percent to more than 800.

The parental leave allowance is currently fixed at W500,000 per month (US$1=W1,128). However, the government has said that it plans to change the program to better reflect individuals' income levels this year.
